However from the past one decade, farmers have been recording falling yeild of apple crop (upto 30-40%) due to inadequate crop pollination. The Niche Area of Excellence Programme on "Pollination Management Research in apples and Other Fruits in Kashmir Valley" was sanctioned by ICAR vide No. F.No.10(5)/2012-EPD dated 26-03-2012 with a total financial support of Rs. 433 lakhs commencing from the year 2011-2012. The programme was approved keeping in view the inadequate crop apple production in valley conditions accuring a loss of about 1600 crores anually to the apple growing economey of Kashmir Valley. The proposal approved in this behalf is aimed to develop R&D capacities of the University leading to faciliating managed pollination of apple and other fruit crops in Kashmir Valley.
